Chapter 4 Weighing The Stakes
After working for the whole morning, Leah felt thirsty, so she planned to drink some water.
When she walked past the corner of the stairs, she heard two servants were secretly talking about her.
"I heard that Melissa graduated with a doctorate overseas.
Not only she's beautiful, but she's also good at dancing.
Last year, she was also the champion for the White Swan Dance Contest in J City."
"You are right. That woman who was married to our master couldn't even talk. She's too timid and compliant too. They didn't hold a wedding for her when she got married into the Harper family, how cheap is that? What kind of wife is this?"
"Even though there's a scar on our master's face, but he is very capable! He's rich and powerful, so how can a mute become his wife?"
"Yes, you are right. I heard that this kind of person who can't talk is considered a third-degree disability."
A third-degree disability...
A flash of light flickered in Leah's eyes.
She was not born mute.
When she was ten years old, a fire smoked her throat.
Her father was not willing to spend big money to send her overseas for treatment. After much delay, her throat became like this.
She didn't understand it when she was young.
But when she grew up, she knew that it was because she wasn't the loving daughter that grew up beside her father since young, but just an outsider who was taken back to the Walsh family halfway through.
Therefore, these discussions would not affect Leah at all.
She smiled unconcernedly, and just as she turned around and was about to leave, she heard a cold and incisive voice appeared from the outside.
"Who gave you the permission to brazenly discuss the Harper family matter?"
The two maids immediately turned around and saw Mr. Harper, staring at them with a cold gaze that looked as if it could freeze people to death.
The two of them immediately panicked, "Sir, we won't do it again! We won't talk nonsense anymore! Please forgive us!"
The man's face was still filled with frost and remained unmoved.
His assistant, Hayden Mills, who was following behind him, came forward and spoke to the two of them, "The two of you don't have to come anymore from tomorrow."
The two maids' hearts were like dead ashes.
Suddenly, Elliot looked towards Leah.
His gaze swept through the stains on her hands, and the apron on her waist.
He frowned slightly and said, "You are my wife, why are you doing all these things?"
His questioning tone made Leah felt quite baffled.
Did he really not know that Jessica was bossing her around?
Seeing that she didn't say anything, the man slightly furrowed his eyebrows, "There are maids in the house. In the future, you don't need to do these things."
Leah's thought for a while, but she didn't express it on her face.
She just nodded obediently.
She untied the apron and put down the broom.
As she was about to go upstairs, she inadvertently glanced at the two maids, who had just got fired and kneeling on the floor.
Leah's mind moved slightly.
The man wasn't helping her.
He did it for the sake of the Harper family's reputation.
Cinderella's story only existed in fairy tales, not in her perception.
Therefore, Leah wouldn't feel grateful to the man for helping her.
It would be too silly.
As soon she got upstairs and opened her bedroom door, her phone suddenly rang.
It was her father.
She hesitated for a while before answering the call.
What she didn't know was, Elliot, who was downstairs, also received a text message from his assistant, Hayden, 'The Walsh family called Mrs. Harper.'
The man slightly narrowed his eyes, and his expression was profound and unpredictable.
Leah didn't know that her phone call was being monitored.
She quietly listened to her father speaking to her on the phone.
"Leah, Dad has an urgent matter that needs your help. Can you go to Elliot's study and find something for me? It's a contract with the title "Real Estate" in red letters. Can you take pictures of it for me? I need every page of it and remember don't let him find out about this."
Samuel was speaking in a relaxed tone, but the contents of his words were not trivial.
Therefore, Leah remained silent and didn't give him a response at once.
Samuel also expected that she might not be willing to do it.
His voice became colder and spoke meaningfully, "Dad knows that you are a filial child. Don't forget, your grandma is still waiting for you."
Leah was daunted by the words "your grandma is still waiting for you."
Her grandmother was still in a coma at the hospital.
Knowing how cold-blooded her father was, he really wouldn't care about her grandmother's life or death.
Leah didn't have any affection towards Samuel anymore.
She was disappointed with her cold-blooded father since long time ago, but her grandmother was different.
She couldn't ignore her grandmother's safety.
She weighed the stakes in her mind and secretly made her decision.
When Leah returned to the room, Elliot was leaving with his jacket.
Before he left, he threw a glance at her.
There was a profound gloom in his glance that she didn't understand.
Leah didn't think much and waited silently until night.
After eleven o'clock, all the maids had gone to rest.
Leah stood in front of Elliot's study, placing her hand on the handle.
